Street Racing is Street Racing, Right? Absolutely not and the confusion is widespread at the expense of making progress in reducing the crime. The difference is simple, street racing is legal and illegal street racing is, well, illegal. The LA Marathon (Foot Race) and the Tour De France (Cycle Race) are both street races. If street racing was illegal then how on earth could these two events be ran on public streets? The concept is the same in the automobile industry. To name a few prominent automobile races: Formula One has a street race in China, Indy Car has street races in Australia, USA, Canada, etc, and even the Dakar Rally Race competes through a variety of street racing settings. Street Racing is controlled, safe, and celebrated whereas Illegal Street Racing is chaotic, dangerous, and criminal.

If we as a society cannot clearly identify the problem; then how can we reduce the crime?

One area often overlooked and/or confused in the area of illegal street racing is the nature of the crime.

Illegal street racing is unlike most any other crime in the world as you can shift the illegal act into an alternate environment and it transitions into legality.

Utilizing the example of murder...The act of murder is illegal in any and all capacities within America. You cannot shift the act of murdering into an alternate location thereby making it legal.

When a news article references murder there is no need to distinct it as "illegal" murder as there is no "legal" murder.

In the capacity of illegal street racing you can take that same person, vehicle, and activity and transition it onto a motorsports track and it becomes legal street racing, drag racing, oval track racing, etc.

Murder, thievery, rape and other similar acts will always be illegal regardless of how, where, and why they occur.

Illegal Street Racing is only illegal because of the location. Shift the location to a sanctioned automotive track and it becomes legal.

There must be a distinction between illegal and legal street racing as they are two different activities. The former destroys, injures, and kills and the latter is a sport, applauded, and rewarded. One is a societal disease and the other is a viable alternative.

Know the difference!
